Homer Jr. Foundation, and resident of Marlton , NJ has been chosen as the 2007 Woman of Achievement by the Mrs. New Jersey United States organization. Melodie was presented with the award at the recent pageant event. The Mrs. New Jersey United States Woman of Achievement Award is a specially designed award honoring those outstanding women that call New Jersey their home. The Organization believes that married women should be recognized for their ability to integrate confidence, intelligence and success through their contributions to the community. The LeRoy W. Homer Jr. Foundation was established in memory of LeRoy Homer, First Officer on United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked and crashed in Shanksville , Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. The Foundation awards yearly scholarships to ambitious young men and women with an interest in aviation. These scholarships allow recipients to pursue professional flight instruction leading to private pilot certification, the first step in their aviation careers. Melodie Homer, wife of LeRoy Homer, accepted the award from Susan Huntley, Mrs. New Jersey United States 2006, and former United Airlines flight attendant. "You could tell he really loved his job," Ms. Huntley remarked. "He was very easy to get along with. His demeanor was one of quiet strength. "Making Higher Education Possible", Susan Huntley's platform for her reign as Mrs. New Jersey , as well as her connection to the aviation industry, prompted her to nominate Melodie Homer for the 2007 Woman of Achievement Award. Melodie Homer thanked Susan Huntley and the Mrs. New Jersey United States pageant for the award, saying, "Sometimes it feels like people are forgetting about the sacrifices made by my husband and so many others that horrible day. And then something like [receiving this award] happens, and it revitalizes me to continue the mission of The Foundation, to continue to encourage young adults to become pilots". Homer Jr. Honored with Tuskegee Airmen Washington, DC., March 29, 2007 - The Tuskegee Airmen received the Congressional Gold Medal today, in a poignant ceremony at the nation's Capitol. Over 300 airmen, spouses, widows and other family members were present in the rotunda when Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, accompanied by the President and other members of the House and Senate, presented this prestigious award to the legendary group of black aviators, over sixty years after they served, in World War II. Because of his heroic actions on September 11, 2001 , the airmen had honored LeRoy Homer by posthumously bestowing him the title - Tuskegee Airman, at his memorial service in 2001. United Airlines #93 was one of four planes hijacked as part of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks . It was the only one of the four planes, which did not reach its intended target, confirmed to be the United States Capitol. Melodie Homer, LeRoy's widow and the President of The LeRoy W. Homer Jr. Foundation was in attendance at the Capitol when the medal was awarded. "LeRoy was inspired by many legendary aviators, including the Tuskegee Airmen", said Melodie Homer of Marlton , NJ . The Tuskegee Airmen received the honor through legislation by Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) and Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY). "It's an honor to attend this [historical event] on LeRoy's behalf", Melodie Homer said. The medal will be placed in the Smithsonian Institute. All airmen received a bronze replica.
